Bipolar Disorder Tests

If you, or someone you love is suspected of having a bipolar disorder then you must see a doctor as soon as possible in order to have a bipolar test performed for an accurate diagnosis.

There really isn't one physical test that will show someone has bipolar disorder but, the testing consists of a bunch of interviews which will establish patent behaviors that are indicative of this disorder. The doctor might ask other people such as family and friends about the patients behavior. During this test the doctor will also evaluate the patient as to their current mental state and ask about manic depressive episodes.

A big part of the diagnosis is ruling out other mental health problems that may have similar symptoms. Your health care professionals will be able to screen for these which include schizophrenia, a borderline personality disorder and attention deficit or hyperactivity disorder to name a few.

This bipolar test might also have a physical component in order to determine if your mood swings have physical causes. The tests also screened for substance abuse which might turn up any alcohol or drugs that could impact your mood. A good test will include not only an evaluation but also information about your alcohol intake, current medications and diet. If you have mood swings, they could be due to other medications such as prednisone, corticosteroids, and medicines that are used to treat depression and anxiety. In addition improper diet can also cause this as a vitamin B12 deficiency can alter moods.

A blood test should be performed as well to rule out a thyroid disorder which can have symptoms similar to bipolar disorder.

The primary subject of the bipolar test will center on the patient's mood swings. Depression and mania in there different phases are easier to notice but the length and severity varies from person to person. Also some people can have the mania and depression at the same time which is referred to as a bipolar mixed state and is difficult for doctors to determine that bipolar disorder is at the root of the problem.
